What is occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy in schools and outpatient settings helps people of all ages improve their ability to perform everyday tasks and activities, whether at home, school, or work. Here’s a breakdown of how OT works in the settings we offer:

In Schools:

  • For Children: Occupational therapists help kids develop the skills they need to succeed in school and daily life. This can include improving fine motor skills (like handwriting), motor coordination (for activities like running or climbing), and sensory processing (for children who are sensitive to light, sound, or touch).

  • Academic Support: They help kids with learning disabilities or challenges such as ADHD, autism, or dyslexia by suggesting strategies or tools to make learning easier.

  • Social Skills: OT also supports children in building social skills, emotional regulation, and independence in school settings, helping them interact with peers and teachers effectively.

Outpatient Therapy (for All Ages):

  • For Adults: Outpatient OT helps adults recover from injuries or surgeries, manage chronic conditions (like arthritis or stroke recovery), or improve cognitive functions after an illness. It focuses on things like getting back to work, driving, and doing household tasks.

  • For Seniors: For older adults, OT can help them maintain independence by teaching them how to adapt their living spaces or daily routines, especially when dealing with aging-related issues such as arthritis or balance problems. They might also assist in managing conditions like dementia, helping individuals stay engaged in meaningful activities.

  • For Teens and Young Adults: OTs work with teens to help them adapt to life changes, whether it's adjusting to a new school, transitioning to adulthood, or managing mental health conditions like anxiety or depression.

  • For Children: For children, OT focuses on enhancing their ability to perform everyday tasks and activities. OTs help children develop essential skills in areas such as motor skills, sensory processing, handwriting, self-care, social interactions, and emotional regulation. By adapting activities and environments, OTs support children in overcoming challenges and achieving independence, promoting success at home, school, and in social settings.

Overall, occupational therapy in schools and outpatient settings is all about helping people of all ages develop the skills and confidence they need to live as independently and successfully as possible, no matter their challenges or stage of life.

Meet the OT

Hi, I’m Dr. Michaela Skinner, an occupational therapist with a deep passion for helping others live more independent and fulfilling lives. I’m originally from Omaha, Nebraska, and currently live in Yutan with my husband and our two dogs, Maximus and Annabeth.

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2019, and went on to receive my Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Creighton University in 2022. Since then, I’ve been dedicated to serving my community and surrounding areas through client-centered, evidence-based care.

I have a strong interest in neurorehabilitation and sensory integration, and I’m also LSVT BIG® certified to provide specialized treatment for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. I truly believe in the power of occupational therapy to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, and I strive every day to be a supportive guide, advocate, and resource for my clients.

Whether I’m helping someone regain function, adapt to life changes, or build confidence in their daily routines, my goal is always the same: to empower others and make a lasting, positive impact.
